Fostering the future: Girls in ICT presented innovative solutions

In Montenegro, the future of technology is looking brighter and more inclusive, a fact clearly demonstrated by this year’s International Girls in ICT Competition, which brought together brilliant young minds from across the country. Initially, the plan was to host 10 teams from various parts of Montenegro. However, the overwhelming response of 34 applications exceeded all expectations. The organizers selected 15 teams to participate in a two-day training session in Podgorica, April 12-13, focused on using the Thunkable platform to develop mobile applications.

The training went far beyond technical learning. It began with ice-breaking and introductory activities, continued with sessions on soft skills and application development, and culminated in an art therapy class led by a faculty professor. Through the theme “My Perfect Island,” participants explored creativity and emotional expression, creating a truly inspiring experience. Teams not selected for in-person training had the opportunity to follow the sessions online.

On April 24th, 2025, the Faculty of Information Technology at the University of Mediterranean in Podgorica hosted the final competition, a celebration of talent, creativity, and collaboration among high school girls. The theme, “Solutions for Women’s Everyday Lives”, challenged participants to address real-world issues faced by women through mobile apps built on the Thunkable platform, blending technology with empathy and innovation.

Eighteen teams from ten Montenegrin municipalities gathered in Podgorica for the event. Industry professionals and supporters shared personal career stories, illustrating how they grew from students to successful IT professionals, inspiring participants with real-world insights. IT students also shared their experience in ICT world.

The goal of the competition was not only to showcase technical skills but to encourage teamwork, confidence, and resilience. The atmosphere was filled with learning, collaboration, and creative problem-solving.Many outstanding applications were presented, making the jury’s task especially challenging. Ultimately, the top three teams were awarded:

First Place – ModaMe, a personalized virtual wardrobe app, developed by the team from Nikšić. Their prize included a one-year scholarship at the Faculty of Information Technology, a tech course of their choice at Logate Institute, and a four-day stay in hotel Princess in Bar.

Second Place – BigSis, a mentorship and guidance app for girls, created by a team from Rožaje. Each team member received a smartphone, donated by a leading Montenegrin mobile operator.o Crnogorski telekom.

Third Place – A safety-focused app, developed by a team from Podgorica, whose members each received a smartwatch, donated by company ACME.

Each application was not only a technical achievement but also a vision for a more inclusive and supportive digital future for women.

What truly made this event exceptional was not just the coding, but the community it created. With guidance from women leaders in IT, and support from key partners such as NLB Banka, Oracle Academy, Crnogorski Telekom, the Agency for Electronic Communications and Postal Services, Thunkable, University “Mediterranean” Podgorica, CEDIS, ACME, and several local tech companies, the competition served as a springboard for lifelong careers in technology.

As one student reflected, “This experience showed me that technology isn’t just for some, it’s a space where I belong, where I can make a difference.”

The Girls in ICT Competition 2025 did more than reward great ideas, it inspired a generation. We remain committed to breaking down barriers and building a future where every girl has the opportunity to innovate, lead, and thrive in the world of ICT.
